Following the rumors from last week, Facebook was reported to have replaced their EdgeRank system with a newer and smarter algorithm which shall now work to surface quality content for the social networking site. It will also serve to surface the news that emerges to be the most important one on your News Feed. The so called replacement forms a part of Facebook’s effective measures team which seeks to glorify the right kind of content at the right time which will help the users to access News Feeds and like it.
Facebook’s software mind Varun Kacholia mentioned about the new algorithm when we wrote on the blog, “Our goal is to show the right content to the right people at the right time so they don’t miss the stories that are important to them. As part of that we want to make sure that the best quality content is being produced, surfaced and shared. Our latest update to the News Feed ranking algorithm helps ensure that the organic content people see from Pages they are connected to is the most interesting to them.” Kacholia also mentioned that Facebook has surveyed a large no of users to get to the bottom of understanding what they actually want to see on the site. Survey questions include, “Is this timely and relevant content”, “Is this content from a source you would trust,” “Would you share it with friends and recommend it to others.” “Is the content genuinely interesting to you or is it trying to game News Feed distribution? (e.g., asking for people to like the content)”.
So what’s new?
The new algorithm is an intuitive one which is being designed to classify high quality posts including all sorts of posts. The new algorithm has already been put to test and have been reported to work fine with a small group of users where interactions and stories were driven and hidden. For pages which are being r eported with decent engagement, the new algorithm will reassure that the content posted by you on Facebook and seen by people matter as fans of your pages and quality of your posts keeps improving with time.
